CLERMONT, Fla. – Point Park University was locked in a defensive battle with NAIA No. 2 Saint Xavier (Ill.) University before succumbing to a 1-0 loss Friday.

It was Point Park’s final matchup at the Spring Games in Clermont, Fla., facing one of their toughest opponents yet.

The Pioneers (5-8) held on until the bottom of the sixth, when back-to-back doubles put a run on the board for Saint Xavier (1-0).

Sophomore pitcher Tiffany Edwards did her part to keep the Cougars off the board, scattering five hits, walking one and striking out two.

Becca Babincak was 2-for-4 and Jess Beitler was 2-for-3 in the effort at the plate. Point Park left nine runners stranded on base.

The Pioneers’ next game is their home-opener against NCAA DII Gannon University March 18 at 1 p.m.

The Pioneers lost 3-1 to Gannon at the Spring Games on Feb. 27.
